Religion is for Brainless Drones

“I have a question. Why do you insist on spreading the cancer that is religion? It’s a dirty lie and all your followers are nothing but brainless drones. ~ James”

Wow!  NOT one of the usual questions I get as an online missionary with Global Media Outreach!  I prayed and then responded:

“Dear James,   I’m sorry you believe we are spreading a cancer of religion. Actually, we do not promote religion.  Jesus didn’t start a religion. The religious people of his day were hypocrites, as many are today.  Jesus came to set us free from religion. Religion is mostly man-made rules.  Trying to obey rules will not save anyone.

“Jesus Christ came to free people. Many years ago I surrendered my life to Christ and I was set free!  My life changed dramatically both inside and out.

“You may call us brainless drones, but many of us are well-educated, professional people. A good friend and his wife are both medical doctors who recognize that Jesus is alive and has set them free from guilt and fear.  Our neighbor is a surgeon who has written books on the power of Jesus Christ to heal and bring peace.  Another good friend is a six-sigma engineer who believes and teaches the science of Intelligent Design. It takes more faith to believe in evolution than it does creation.

“I have received countless letters from people worldwide who have medical or psychological problems caused by guilt and fear.  Once they receive the good news, they too are set free.

“What’s the good news?  That there is nothing you have ever done that God doesn’t WANT to forgive.  He loves you.  That is why Jesus came—to live a sinless life so that He could be the required sinless sacrifice for the sins of the world. He came to free us!

“When people receive that free gift of salvation, then they also receive the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit brings all of His fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control. There are NINE fruit — as found in Galatians 5:22-23. This fruit is available to every follower of Jesus Christ. He/she only needs to exercise that fruit. When people begin acting on the Holy Spirit within them, they realize they now have the power to resist temptation. They WANT to do the right thing. They begin to experience a joy and a peace they have never known.

“This good news, James, brings permanent change, as it did for me. Marriages are healed, depression disappears, suicidal thoughts are forgotten.  This life is short and temporary. Blink your eyes one time and that is this life compared to eternity.  This life is a test. I want to pass the test. Don’t  you, James?

“Here are two helpful websites:  www.JesusFactOrFiction.com  and www.WhoIsJesus-Really.com     Please write back. I am here to help.”

James responded with a short note of apology.

  • It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.  Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.     Galatians 5:1
  • Would you have responded to James’ letter differently?                                       Do you have “religion” or a relationship with Christ?  Do you see a difference?

About Kathleen

God delights in working through His people as they submit to Him. Jesus said to go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone (Mark 16:15). No matter where we live on this planet, people are separated from God because of sin. We ALL need a Savior, and there’s only ONE. It brings me great joy to share Christ with the lost and lonely. Over the years I’ve learned a great deal while facilitating Bible studies. I’ve found myself on college and university campuses, the beach, the streets, the hospital, the jail and the juvenile facility for incarcerated teens sharing God’s message of love. I also serve as an online missionary with Global Media Outreach. I’ve seen countless lives transformed when people turn away from sin and turn to Jesus. The changes God makes are real and lasting. These are some of my experiences. NOTE: My stories have been altered, removing any and all identifying factors. This includes names and other particulars in order to protect confidentiality and anonymity.

Excellent, well-thought out reply to an obvious mocker. I ran into some really hostile remarks recently too. I think the hostility is often a cover-up to a deep longing inside of a person who is desperate. Glad he contacted you. Hopefully, James will consider your response carefully and respond to the Holy Spirit who is working to soften his heart.

    • Kathleen says:

Oh, Karen, I’m sure you’re right! He only responded with a short note of apology. I did respond to that. But it’s time to write again and try to get a warm dialogue going.

  2. David says:

Hi Kathleen, James, you are not alone in your thinking and that is very unfortunate. The Bible teaches that Satan is the father of lies. He convinces people of mistruths. You are blessed to have someone like Kathleen to give you God’s view. I hope God leads you back to this site for more of Kathleen’s (GODS) insights. Kathleen u are a blessing to me every time I read your blog.

    • Kathleen says:

Dear David, Thank you for your encouragement! You are correct. Satan is busy convincing people of his lies. It is God’s will that we dispel them and help people come to the saving knowledge of His truth.

  3. Alicia says:

I usually don’t run into people who ask offensive questions that actually will consider what I have to say. I start out trying to explain, but usually they just start attacking me personally.

That’s awesome that you could witness to him! Praise God for people like you who know how to answer questions and witness correctly. God bless you. 🙂

    • Kathleen says:

Thank you Alicia. Actually, I was caught off-guard by his comment. I had to take a moment and pray first before responding. I’m glad I did. Thank you for your encouragement.

  4. Mark says:

    very good message Kathleen!

  5. renee says:

Dear Kathleen, I would like to read this aloud on 3rd Sunday. Would you mind? Thank you Jesus that you are real and help us when we depend on you for your glory! Praise you for showing up just at the right time as you promised. Make me more like you!
I thank our one true living God for your example. (K). You are how I want to be! I want to follow Jesus and point my life straight as an arrow toward Christ. So everyone can know Him.

    • Kathleen says:

Dear Renee, Thank you for your kind words. Indeed, if you can use this message, please do. But please don’t look to me as your example. Look to Jesus. When we look too closely at another human being, we’re sure to become disappointed.

  6. Roy says:

Very good response. You corrected his impression of the Gospel and then explained it clearly with your own testimony. GBY Roy
