Restless People

“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”       St. Augustine of Hippo, 400 AD

Remember my friend Martha who was not interested in attending Bible study?  She said she didn’t believe in God. If there is a God she did not believe she needed to be accountable to Him for her actions.

I was careful never again to invite Martha to Bible study, but I did share with her answers to prayer. I did share with her exciting truths I’d learn from the Bible.  I did share with her God’s faithfulness to me and my family. Martha would listen with interest.  How I loved her!

That was when our children were small.  Now they have all left the nest.  Looking back, I see a strong contrast in our lives and in the lives of our children. I have continued in Bible study and God has blessed our marriage, our children and our grandchildren.

On the other hand, Martha left her husband when he became boring.  Her children, although well-educated, have gone the way of the world in radical ways I won’t mention.

Martha is restless and continues to search for meaning to life.  Yet there is no genuine rest until we find our rest in Christ alone. I will continue to pray for her. I will continue to look for opportunities to share the hope that only Jesus Christ offers.

  • Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.     Matthew 11:28-30
  • By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles?   Matthew 7:16

About Kathleen

God delights in working through His people as they submit to Him. Jesus said to go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone (Mark 16:15).

No matter where we live on this planet, people are separated from God because of sin. We ALL need a Savior, and there’s only ONE.

It brings me great joy to share Christ with the lost and lonely. Over the years I’ve learned a great deal while facilitating Bible studies. I’ve found myself on college and university campuses, the beach, the streets, the hospital, the jail and the juvenile facility for incarcerated teens sharing God’s message of love. I also serve as an online missionary with Global Media Outreach. I’ve seen countless lives transformed when people turn away from sin and turn to Jesus. The changes God makes are real and lasting. These are some of my experiences.

It’s so easy to spot restlessness in others. Sometimes even believers miss it in ourselves. We must learn to bring all our anxieties to the Lord and exchange them for His peace. Thanks for this reminder, Kathleen!

Yes, I too agree with Liana that Martha is so blessed to have you as a friend and may God reward you for your faithful love to her.

God has placed her in my life and given me a love for her. It’s almost as if I feel a responsibility to be all He wants me to be in her life.
