One-Child Policy

I was talking with an outspoken atheist who thought China’s former One-Child Policy was a good thing.

I told her I disagreed. “I know China has a huge population, but I recently read that China now has 30 million more men than women!”

She said, “I agree that abortion is sad, especially when women abort a daughter because they hope for a son. And yes, a forced abortion policy is unfortunate, but at least they are keeping the population down.  I believe we need organizations like Planned Parenthood.  Abortion is never a good answer, but it is one solution to the problem.”

I said, “I think you see global population growth as a problem—a problem that man needs to fix.  The difference between you and me is that I trust God and you don’t. God instructed man to ‘Be fruitful, increase in number and fill the earth.’  When the earth is full enough, then He has a plan. Perhaps that is when Jesus will return. I don’t know. But I do know that we are to do our part – trust and obey God.”

She responded, “What you believe is nothing more than mythology—whether it be Greek, Roman or Egyptian—it is mythology.”

I smiled, “Hey, you are my friend and I love you. I’m glad we can agree to disagree.”

  •  God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”    Genesis 1:28

About Kathleen

God delights in working through His people as they submit to Him. Jesus said to go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone (Mark 16:15). No matter where we live on this planet, people are separated from God because of sin. We ALL need a Savior, and there’s only ONE. It brings me great joy to share Christ with the lost and lonely. Over the years I’ve learned a great deal while facilitating Bible studies. I’ve found myself on college and university campuses, the beach, the streets, the hospital, the jail and the juvenile facility for incarcerated teens sharing God’s message of love. I also serve as an online missionary with Global Media Outreach. I’ve seen countless lives transformed when people turn away from sin and turn to Jesus. The changes God makes are real and lasting. These are some of my experiences. NOTE: My stories have been altered, removing any and all identifying factors. This Faith Walk post is a topic many people want to simplify. They fail to grapple with the consequences of taking control of God’s creation set into motion from their own actions. The Scriptures noted reveal the opportunity and responsibilities each has in preserving life created and valued by Him.

I was talking with a man whose mother-in-law admitted that she had considered having an abortion when she was pregnant with the woman who is now his wife. He said, “Well I’m certainly glad you reconsidered and that my wife is alive today.”
I’m sorry to hear about your friend and that she thinks our faith in God is “mythology”. That makes my heart sink. I hope she comes to know Jesus soon.

Unfortunately, it does seem there is a callous indifference among many people today…and it’s on the increase. It reminds me of 2 Timothy 3:1-5 “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.”
