We had our Bible table set up on the beach promenade, when a man stopped by. He appeared to be middle aged, said he’d been divorced once and was now living with a girlfriend. Said he’d like to be married again but he didn’t know how to tell if she’s the right one. “I don’t want another divorce.”
I suggested that first he needs to be surrendered to Jesus Christ. THEN, he is to seek a woman who shares his faith. The Bible tells us not to be unequally yoked with an unbeliever.
“Only when you are both following Jesus will you share the same desires: to follow Jesus, to obey Him and to honor Him with your lives. Only then will God fill you with His Holy Spirit so you will then have the love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control available to you–that is needed in marriage. In my opinion, if neither you nor your wife are committed to following Christ, then you will be more likely to split up when difficulties arise.”
He wasn’t a church-goer, but he said he might be interested in learning more. I explained the salvation message and he listened carefully, but wasn’t ready to make a decision today. I gave him the booklet, Would You Like to Know God Personally? I suggested he read it carefully and when he is ready to make a decision, there is a prayer at the end of the booklet he could say. I explained that this is the most important decision of his life. I also suggested he share the booklet with his girlfriend and then invited them to attend our church. He didn’t commit but said he’d think about it.
- Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14
- But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23
