We met a fisherman who was fishing off the pier. We talked to him about fish – and then about God. I asked him the question, “If you were to die today, where do you think you’d go?” He said, “Colorado.”
“Colorado? You mean that is where your body will be buried?” He nodded.
“But what about your soul? Your soul will continue to live throughout eternity. This life we now live is just a blink of an eye compared to eternity. It’s what we do with this life, that will determine where our soul lives for all eternity.”
He said, “I suppose heaven, then.”
“If God were to ask you, ‘Why should I let you into my heaven?’ How would you answer Him?” He didn’t know.
I showed him a little booklet that would give him the answer to that question and show him how to get right with God and have the abundant life God promises. He was eager to read it. We prayed with him and he was appreciative.
Another young guy had a bucket filled to the brim with fish, mostly mackerel. Again, we talked about fish and then about God. He told us he believed in God, but he knew nothing about Jesus. I explained, “We come to God through Jesus His Son.”
He sincerely wanted to know more about Jesus. We shared the gospel message with him and then we asked if we could pray for him. He was grateful. He eagerly accepted our literature and began reading it immediately.
We were on the pier for only two hours, but had several wonderful and exciting encounters. It seemed that most of the people we met were simply lonely. They appreciated the conversation – and learning of the hope that Jesus offers.
Two booklets we shared:
- “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”

[This life is temporary. This life is short. When this life is over, our bodies will die and become empty shells, but our souls will continue to live forever. Where will the “real you” live?
