Living Water for a Surfer

A surfer stopped by our table at the beach and I offered him a free Bible.

He said, “I can’t believe this!  Two weeks ago I was in a car accident and I should have died.  Instead, I walked away!  Now someone is offering me a Bible.  I’m beginning to think God is trying to get my attention.”

I said, “You may be right.  Tell me something.  IF you would have died in that car accident, do you know where you would have gone?”

He said, “No, I don’t.”
I said, “If I didn’t know I was going to heaven when I die, I think I’d be worried.  I think I’d have trouble sleeping at night.”

He said, “I AM worried.  I DO have trouble sleeping at night.”

At this point, I shared the message of Jesus with him using the booklet, Would You Like to Know God Personally?  By Bill Bright.  Afterward, he said he wanted to turn from his sins and become a follower of Jesus.

We prayed with him and he said he wanted to start going to a church and find a youth group.  We sent him on his way with a “Surfer’s Packet”—a waterproof bag containing a Bible, candy bar, booklets and helpful information about recommended youth groups and churches, including our own.

What joy to interact with that precious surfer and to see his smile as he walked away with a new faith, a new direction and a new Bible.

About Kathleen

God delights in working through His people as they submit to Him. Jesus said to go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone (Mark 16:15). No matter where we live on this planet, people are separated from God because of sin. We ALL need a Savior, and there’s only ONE. It brings me great joy to share Christ with the lost and lonely. Over the years I’ve learned a great deal while facilitating Bible studies. I’ve found myself on college and university campuses, the beach, the streets, the hospital, the jail and the juvenile facility for incarcerated teens sharing God’s message of love. I also serve as an online missionary with Global Media Outreach. I’ve seen countless lives transformed when people turn away from sin and turn to Jesus. The changes God makes are real and lasting. These are some of my experiences. NOTE: My stories have been altered, removing any and all identifying factors. This was a “God-moment” for this young surfer, and he clearly recognized it. I will pray for him that he will choose to follow the Lord. Thank you Kathleen for being faithful in your choice to follow Him in this ministry.

  2. Liana says:

Such a beautiful plan unravelling for this young man. Salvation lovingly interwoven amidst the circumstances of his life. All glory to God.

  3. Frank King says:

Kathleen, you seized the moment again. It’s good the surfer took the potentially fatal accident to heart. Sometimes, God is speaking to us through experiences in our life. The question is, how will respond.

    • Kathleen says:

Those of us who volunteer at the beach table are constantly watching for opportunities so we may “seize the moment.” That is why we’re there! God blesses us as we obey. Thanks for stopping by!
