Lilith Starr, founder of the Satanic Temple of Seattle, is working to bring Satan clubs to elementary schools. “We are a very serious religion,” she said.
The national movement is attempting to establish a dozen After School Satan Clubs across the country. Local chapters have applied for space at public elementary schools in cities including Atlanta, Detroit, Washington, Portland, Ore., Tacoma, Washington, Salt Lake City, Tucson and Los Angeles.
A 2001 high court ruling in a civil case brought by the Child Evangelism Fellowship of Missouri held that when a government operates a “limited public forum” such as after-school clubs, it cannot discriminate against the kind of speech that takes place. The victory permitted the Good News Clubs to teach the Bible in the classrooms after school hours. It also opened the school door for students of any faith, or no faith, to be taught the ways of Satanism.
Starr founded the Seattle temple in 2014. She said the group, which has 78 members, always closes sessions with a “Hail Satan” invocation. She outlined the group’s Seven Tenets, including a belief that “the freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend.” [Condensed from Rick Anderson’s story entitled, The Devil’s Advocates — Satanists aim to counter Christians with their own after-school clubs. What can we do? We can pray that parents will have the wisdom and discernment NOT to allow their children to participate in a Satan Club. We can pray for the schools that have Good News Clubs. We can help start another Good News Club or become a club helper.
