Construction Workers Need Jesus Too!

Nearly two years ago there was a wildfire in our community.  Hundreds of homes were destroyed, including the house across the street from us. Finally, after all this time, construction has begun on the new home. There are lots of extra cars, trucks and construction workers parked up and down the street.

Our house is the only house on the block with a large shade tree in front. There’s also a short brick wall, the perfect height for sitting on, and a cement bench under our shade tree.

Yesterday at noon I noticed a group of construction workers sitting on our bench and wall, enjoying their lunch under the shade tree. I grabbed a bunch of tracts in both English and Spanish and headed out the door.  The men saw me coming and looked worried.

“Hola!  I’ve brought you something to read while you’re having your lunch! These are little comics about Jesus!”  The men eagerly received them.

Their boss said, “I was afraid you were going to ask us to leave.”

“Oh no!  This is a nice shady spot for you. But I do have one request:  that you pick up any papers or cigarette butts before you leave.  They happily agreed to do that.

Then I said to the group,  “Let me ask you a question. If you were to die today, do you know where you would go?”  Nobody was sure.  “And if God were to ask you for a reason He should let you into heaven,  how would you answer Him?”  They didn’t know.

I explained that the little booklets and comics I gave them have the correct answer.  “We are all sinners and none of us deserves to go to heaven. But because Jesus lived a sinless life, He could purchase our salvation by dying on the cross. He only wants us to turn from our sins and receive His free gift of salvation.”  They listened politely.  Some nodded and said thank you.

Tomorrow I’ll go talk with them again.  I have some copies of The Jesus Movie  to share, in both English and Spanish.  I might also get out my blender and make them some ice blended mochas!  The last guys that worked for us loved them!

Meanwhile, these are just the first workers on the project!  They are pouring the foundation. Soon there’ll be a new group men coming to frame the house, then the drywall guys, plumbers, painters, roofers, etc.  I will have to order more tracts and Jesus movies!  What fun!

  • He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.  Mark 16:15
  • One of the tracts I shared: https://www.chick.com/products/tract?stk=1&ue=d
  • My simplified recipe for delicious ice blended mochas:  water, ice, instant coffee, powdered milk, Hershey’s unsweetened chocolate and sugar to taste. Put all the above in your blender.  Enjoy!

About Kathleen

God delights in working through His people as they submit to Him. Jesus said to go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone (Mark 16:15). No matter where we live on this planet, people are separated from God because of sin. We ALL need a Savior, and there’s only ONE. It brings me great joy to share Christ with the lost and lonely. Over the years I’ve learned a great deal while facilitating Bible studies. I’ve found myself on college and university campuses, the beach, the streets, the hospital, the jail and the juvenile facility for incarcerated teens sharing God’s message of love. I also serve as an online missionary with Global Media Outreach. I’ve seen countless lives transformed when people turn away from sin and turn to Jesus. The changes God makes are real and lasting. These are some of my experiences. NOTE: My stories have been altered, removing any and all identifying factors.
