Phone Call – Glad I Didn’t Hang Up!

When our children were small there was no such thing as Caller ID.  The phone rang and we had no idea who was on the other end.

“Hello? Is this Barbara?” came a strange, masculine voice.

“Sorry.  You must have the wrong number.”

“Really? But you even sound like Barbara.”

“There’s no one here by that name.”

“But your voice sounds so nice…are you married?” he asked in a slow, sleazy way.

“Yes I am,” I replied tartly, wondering where this was going and breathing a prayer for an opportunity to share Christ with him.

“Oh, too bad,” he said.  “Tell me, do you ever go out on your husband?”

“No I don’t,” I answered.

“You don’t? Why not?”

By now I was convinced God wanted to use me here.  I said, “If you really want to know why, and if you will listen, I will tell you.”

“Yeah, sure, I’ll listen.”

“Well, just a few years ago I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ.  As a result, God completely changed my life and filled me with a deep love for Christ and a deeper love and respect for my husband. Because of that, I would never want to disappoint God or hurt my husband by doing something so foolish as going out on him. Nor have I ever had a desire to do so.”

My caller was silent for a few seconds. Then he said, “Ma’am, that’s nice…that’s real nice. Well, I guess I’ll call Barbara,” and he hung up.

I stood there still holding the phone, a little dazed. Why didn’t I ask him if he’d like to give his life to Jesus too?

“Lord, let there be a next time!  Meanwhile, thank You for helping me share a little bit with that man. Use that small amount of truth to touch his heart with the reality of your love and power.”

About Kathleen

God delights in working through His people as they submit to Him. Jesus said to go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone (Mark 16:15). No matter where we live on this planet, people are separated from God because of sin. We ALL need a Savior, and there’s only ONE. It brings me great joy to share Christ with the lost and lonely. Over the years I’ve learned a great deal while facilitating Bible studies. I’ve found myself on college and university campuses, the beach, the streets, the hospital, the jail and the juvenile facility for incarcerated teens sharing God’s message of love. I also serve as an online missionary with Global Media Outreach. I’ve seen countless lives transformed when people turn away from sin and turn to Jesus. The changes God makes are real and lasting. These are some of my experiences. NOTE: My stories have been altered, removing any and all identifying factors. This includes names and other particulars in order to protect confidentiality and anonymity.

Glad that your conversation ended the way it did. It could have gone in a different direction. I had a call one time from a strang man, very similar to yours, that did not end well. In today’s world it is even more dangerous at times.

    • Kathleen says:

I agree, Linda, we are living in a more dangerous world today. Still we need to keep alert for opportunities when they arise. Thank you for stopping by!

  2. Frank K says:

That caller got something he did not expect. But it was something he needed. God can use any occasion for His glory if we make ourselves available.

    • Kathleen says:

You’re right about that! He did not expect the message he received. I’m believing God used it in his life, and may still be using it.

  3. Dorothy T. says:

I probably would have slammed the phone in his ear! I don’t think I’ve heard of anything so blatantly rude. It’s amazing that you stayed on the phone that long.

    • Kathleen says:

Dorothy, I understand your feelings. Yet I remained on the phone hoping (and praying) for an opportunity to share Christ with him. I’m glad I did.
