The Little Red Schoolhouse at the Fair

I’ve been volunteering at the county fair for years.  I usually work 2-3 shifts telling Bible stories to the children who come to The Little Red Schoolhouse, a ministry of Child Evangelism Fellowship.

CEF has been an established ministry at county fairs across America for decades. They all have the same purpose—to share the good news of Jesus Christ with youngsters.  Kids are also invited to join the Mailbox Club, so they can be followed up through the year with a free Bible study that comes in the mail for their age level.

One woman came to the LRS with her 10-year-old daughter. “I came to know the Lord Jesus in this little red schoolhouse when I was 10-years-old. I want my daughter to have the same experience.”

Another time a man came in with his 12-year-old son. They wanted to hear the story together.  When I finished my presentation I asked if I could pray with them.

The father quickly stood.  “Actually, we are atheists. I was curious about what you were teaching in here.  I want you to know you did a good job. You’ve given me a lot to think about.  Thank you.”

Years ago our children enjoyed helping me in the LRS.  Later the grandchildren became my helpers. They would stand on the porch and invite children to come inside to hear the story.  They enjoyed handing out Bible tracts or holding up pictures while I told the story,  etc.

Six-year-old Paul had helped for two hours when I decided it was time for a break. “Why don’t we take a walk to see the barnyard animals.”
“No thanks, Grandma.  I just wanna stay here and help.”
“Aren’t you getting bored, listening to the same story over and over?”
“No Grandma, ‘cuz every time you tell the story, it’s a little different.”

Unfortunately for the grandkids, there is now a new rule:  All volunteers must be at least  15 years old.

  • He [Jesus] said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Mark 16:15
  • This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.     1 John 4:10

About Kathleen

God delights in working through His people as they submit to Him. Jesus said to go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone (Mark 16:15). No matter where we live on this planet, people are separated from God because of sin. We ALL need a Savior, and there’s only ONE. It brings me great joy to share Christ with the lost and lonely. Over the years I’ve learned a great deal while facilitating Bible studies. I’ve found myself on college and university campuses, the beach, the streets, the hospital, the jail and the juvenile facility for incarcerated teens sharing God’s message of love. I also serve as an online missionary with Global Media Outreach. I’ve seen countless lives transformed when people turn away from sin and turn to Jesus. The changes God makes are real and lasting. These are some of my experiences. NOTE: My stories have been altered, removing any and all identifying factors.
