USSR & the Bible

The USSR was commonly known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.  It existed from 1922 until 1991.  Years ago, my husband Dan and I had the opportunity to spend three weeks in the USSR.

I had read in Mark 16:15  that Jesus said, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”  This was my opportunity!  We were told we could bring one personal Bible into the country.  Naturally I brought one for myself.   I also brought one for Dan, though he was not yet a follower of Jesus.

We had learned from a friend in the state department that there were listening devices planted most everywhere.  Moreover, we were told that those who listen must listen to everything they hear.

The first thing I’d do when we checked into a hotel room was to search for a listening device.  Most of the time I’d find one hidden in the radiator, which was not turned on until cooler weather.  Sometimes I’d find one in the ceiling vent.

Whenever Dan would leave our room I would go to the radiator–or stand directly below the ceiling vent–and I’d read from the Gospel of John, chapters 1 or 3.  I would also read from Romans 8.   I was careful to read slowly and distinctly, enunciating each word.

Why did I bring a Bible for my husband?  So I could leave it behind–but not intact! I actually separated different books of the Bible and carefully distributed them in secret places and would pray they’d be found.

What an amazing trip it was, full if intrigue and excitement.   We later learned our guide was a member of the KGB!   Her charm was infectious, but she was a bit of an enigma.  For example, she claimed to be an atheist, but would often exclaim,  “Thank God!”  when something good would happen.

  • Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,
because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.  For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.     Romans 8:1-4

About Kathleen

God delights in working through His people as they submit to Him. Jesus said to go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone (Mark 16:15). No matter where we live on this planet, people are separated from God because of sin. We ALL need a Savior, and there’s only ONE. It brings me great joy to share Christ with the lost and lonely. Over the years I’ve learned a great deal while facilitating Bible studies. I’ve found myself on college and university campuses, the beach, the streets, the hospital, the jail and the juvenile facility for incarcerated teens sharing God’s message of love. I also serve as an online missionary with Global Media Outreach. I’ve seen countless lives transformed when people turn away from sin and turn to Jesus. The changes God makes are real and lasting. These are some of my experiences. NOTE: My stories have been altered, removing any and all identifying factors.
