Gateways to Better Education

The mission of  Gateways to Better Education  is to create faith-friendly public schools where students have the freedom to express their faith and learn about the importance of the Bible and Judeo-Christian history, thought and values. They envision public schools as learning communities enriched by appropriately and lawfully including this important information.

Gateways does this by equipping parents, teachers, administrators, and school board members in America’s 99,000 public schools. Many public school children are learning only the secular side of Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. They don’t understand that these traditional holidays teach important lessons about Christianity.

The problem goes beyond how Christianity is treated during the holidays. Even the mention of God is now suppressed in many classrooms. Both teachers and students are uncertain about their rights of religious expression. Many feel the law forbids any discussion of God or even praying privately over their lunch.  But this is not true!

The Holiday Restoration Campaign is designed to help correct misinformation and restore accurate teaching of the religious nature of these traditional American holidays. This is done in a positive, relational way.

The goal is to have as many Christian parents as possible give a Gateways Holiday Card to their children’s teachers. This is an 8-page card that looks like a beautiful greeting card. In a light-hearted story a public school teacher is informed about what is legal and appropriate in the classroom. They will find the legal documentation and lesson plan ideas helpful and reassuring. •  Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates.     Deuteronomy 11:18-20

About Kathleen

God delights in working through His people as they submit to Him. Jesus said to go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone (Mark 16:15). No matter where we live on this planet, people are separated from God because of sin. We ALL need a Savior, and there’s only ONE. It brings me great joy to share Christ with the lost and lonely. Over the years I’ve learned a great deal while facilitating Bible studies. I’ve found myself on college and university campuses, the beach, the streets, the hospital, the jail and the juvenile facility for incarcerated teens sharing God’s message of love. I also serve as an online missionary with Global Media Outreach. I’ve seen countless lives transformed when people turn away from sin and turn to Jesus. The changes God makes are real and lasting. These are some of my experiences. NOTE: My stories have been altered, removing any and all identifying factors. This includes names and other particulars in order to protect confidentiality and anonymity.

I’m not sure that I agree with this campaign’s goals. I’m all for teaching history, and even teaching religion in classrooms, as long as it includes ALL religions. I am a Christian, but I don’t think that I have the right to preach my faith in public schools. That should be left to private schools or the home – and Sunday School of course.

Dear Kristen, Thank you for your comment. Perhaps you don’t understand the mission of Gateways to Better Education. We’re talking here about major religious holidays celebrated in the USA. Many public school teachers and administrators are unclear about what is legal when it comes to explaining different religious holidays. As a result, many say nothing for fear of negative repercussions. The holiday cards are sent to the teachers so they then know what is and what is not legal. Most are grateful for the information.

It is so sad that at one time children in public schools were led in prayer and now they are too afraid to say the name God or Jesus for fear of repercussion. What an opportunity to hear about Christ, especially for those who do not come from Christian homes and may never step into a church. Your friend at Women With Intention

Thank you Mindy. I so agree! I’ve met teenagers who did not know why we celebrate Easter. It’s important for them to know it’s not just about just rabbits, eggs and candy.

Kathleen; thanks for sharing this. I was not aware of this ministry. I visited the website to see the great resources it has. I’m sure that it is true that many Christian teachers in public schools today don’t know what liberty they have in the area of religious or Christian expression so they err on the side of caution by saying nothing.

    • Kathleen says:

Thank you, Pastor Frank. That’s the point! Teachers need to know what is legally permissible so that they can freely teach.
