Unmarried & Pregnant

A young couple who faithfully attended our college campus Bible study came to me privately: She was pregnant.

I had mentored Jaime for two years. Her love for God and His Word were strong. I was disappointed with the news, yet I loved them both. They said they loved each other and wanted to marry.  I was invited to attend the wedding in three days!

Three days later I was there with both of the immediate families and the best man.  I then discovered that I was to be her matron of honor!  The sweet ceremony was followed by a luncheon in a small banquet room of a nearby restaurant.

Just as the father of the bride was about to give a toast,  the groom spoke up. “I need to say something:  What we did was wrong and it was my fault. I want to apologize and ask forgiveness from each of you and from God.  I know I’ve disappointed everyone here.  But even though we did not start our marriage right, it is our desire to honor God with our lives.  I love Jaime and I will cherish her for as long as I live.”

As one can imagine, there was not a dry eye in the room.

Jaime and Joe recently celebrated ten years of marriage. They are active in their church and are raising their children to love the Lord Jesus.

  •  husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body. “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.     Ephesians 5:28-32

About Kathleen

God delights in working through His people as they submit to Him. Jesus said to go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone (Mark 16:15). No matter where we live on this planet, people are separated from God because of sin. We ALL need a Savior, and there’s only ONE. It brings me great joy to share Christ with the lost and lonely. Over the years I’ve learned a great deal while facilitating Bible studies. I’ve found myself on college and university campuses, the beach, the streets, the hospital, the jail and the juvenile facility for incarcerated teens sharing God’s message of love. I also serve as an online missionary with Global Media Outreach. I’ve seen countless lives transformed when people turn away from sin and turn to Jesus. The changes God makes are real and lasting. These are some of my experiences. NOTE: My stories have been altered, removing any and all identifying factors. Another precious testimony Kathleen. What a beautiful, humble confession from the groom. Such a show of love for his new wife and for God.

  2. Amy says:

Very touching story. Thanks for sharing. blessings, Amy

  3. Helene says:

1 John 1:9 put into practice, Praise the Lord.

    • Kathleen says:

Absolutely! 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

  4. Antoinette says:

I love how he took full responsibility for what they both did. So many young men try and blame the girl fully by painting her as a slut or the temptress and not take responsibility for their own actions. It shows such love that he was willing to shoulder all the blame and thus protect the virtue of his new wife.

  5. Lisa says:

My marriage had a similar beginning, though it took a few years of painful hardship for us to both turn to Christ. Since then, He has blessed us with five godly sons, and we recently celebrated our 34th anniversary. Praise God for His amazing mercy and grace!

    • Kathleen says:

Yours is a success story, Lisa. There are many wonderful stories like yours when people turn to Christ. Thank you for sharing His faithfulness!

  6. Dorothy says:

I’m glad they did the right thing. I wish more people (especially my generation) were marrying rather than just moving in together.

  7. Frank King says:

Wow! Love it. It took something special for the groom to confess and say what he did at such a profound moment. It was the indwelling Spirit of Christ inside him. Christ makes all the difference in the world.

  8. Absolutely beautiful!! That took a lot of guts to be “real” and confess that in front of everyone. God was truly honored during that moment for sure.

    • Kathleen says:

I agree, it took great courage for him to make his confession. Yet I believe he knew it was something he had to do. God was honored.

  9. Powerful message how one mistake does not have to define our lives.
