Five Minutes on Your Knees

My friend Shirley said she was getting a divorce. “I’ve had enough! He will never change!”

I said, “I would hate for you to rush into this. That word divorce is so final. I heard a pastor say that one word a married couple should never utter is the word divorce. As long as it’s never mentioned, it can never become a reality.”

“It’s already settled.  We’re selling the house and dividing everything equally.”

“Shirley,  I know you’ve prayed about this. But often our prayers end up being only a minute or less.  Why don’t you show God that you are serious about doing the right thing. Make a commitment to spend five minutes a day on your knees praying for Mike.  You might also consider fasting one day a week, or fasting from sugar for a while.”

A week later she called.  “I did as you suggested and I believe the Lord has spoken to my heart. He’s showing me that I am the one who needs to change!”

Two weeks later: “I told Mike I don’t want a divorce.  He said he doesn’t either. Then he suggested we take a vacation!  I will NEVER stop spending five minutes a day on my knees!”

I mentioned Shirley’s story to a discouraged man who stopped at our Bible table at the beach. He listened and said, “My son is addicted to heroin. I’m going to begin spending five minutes a day on my knees praying for him.”

  • Ask, and it will be given to you seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.     Matthew 7:7
  • Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.              Psalm 107:28-30

About Kathleen

God delights in working through His people as they submit to Him. Jesus said to go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone (Mark 16:15). No matter where we live on this planet, people are separated from God because of sin. We ALL need a Savior, and there’s only ONE. It brings me great joy to share Christ with the lost and lonely. Over the years I’ve learned a great deal while facilitating Bible studies. I’ve found myself on college and university campuses, the beach, the streets, the hospital, the jail and the juvenile facility for incarcerated teens sharing God’s message of love. I also serve as an online missionary with Global Media Outreach. I’ve seen countless lives transformed when people turn away from sin and turn to Jesus. The changes God makes are real and lasting. These are some of my experiences. NOTE: My stories have been altered, removing any and all identifying factors. Thank you for the encouragement…and I thank God for you! I’m going to do this too.

  2. Mike says:

What an encouraging story! Prayer really does work in ways beyond our comprehension, to do things we never thought possible. (BTW, I’m not the Mike in the story)

    • Kathleen says:

Thanks Mike, I agree! There are times when we might pray about a difficult situation and then God answers and gives us favor and we are dumbfounded! It’s all about trust. He is indeed faithful!

This story is so true and it can be a blessing to everyone. I wish that when couples were getting married that they would all get a copy of it. If we all would spend five minutes or more praying for needs, and for the Holy Spirit to fill our lives we would all be changed. It would only be for the good. Thanks for sharing this story.

  4. Love these God moments shared when one realizes all they have to do is to invite him into the conflict and He brings in His peace and heals the relationship!!
