Annie and Jason were two kids I loved and watched grow up. When they needed money I’d put them to work doing odd jobs. They loved my cooking. Perhaps it was because they were young that they’d always devour whatever I set before them.
One day when Jason was 13 he asked, “Do you think I’ll ever fall in love with a girl?”
I said, “Yes, someday it’ll happen.”
“But it hasn’t happened yet.”
“You’re still young, Jason. Give yourself time.”
“What if I’m gay?”
“You are not gay?”
“But what if I am?”
“If you are, then you go to God and ask Him to help you. Once we surrender our lives to Jesus Christ, He gives us the desire to obey Him. He also gives us the power to do the right thing. Your part is to obey God and to trust Him.”
One day when Annie was 16 she said, “I think I’m a lesbian.”
“What? What makes you think you’re a lesbian?”
“Well, I’ve never had a boyfriend. The girls at school said I must be. So I guess I am.”
“Annie, you are NOT a lesbian. You have never had a boyfriend because you are not ready for a boyfriend. Someday when you are ready, God is going to send a young man into your life to be your husband—a man who shares your love for Jesus Christ. Your part is to obey God, to wait on God and to trust God. Don’t ever again think you are a lesbian. You are not.”
Today they are both married to Christian spouses and raising up godly children.
What if there had been no Christian friend to talk with? Some adults might say, “You’ll never know for sure unless you experiment.” Kids today are confused. Adults today are confused. Why? It’s because they do not know the Word of God, nor the power of God in their lives.
- Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
- Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

This life is temporary. This life is short. When this life is over, our bodies will die and become empty shells, but our souls will continue to live forever. Where will the “real you” live? Thank you for writing this! When I was young I didn’t have a girlfriend and people called me gay. I was “in Christ” and I knew I was not gay. I simply was not ready to date or the right lady never came along. A lot of people today believe they are gay because people tell them they are. They believe the lies. I am glad for the outcome of the young people in your story. Brother Earl
Earl, Thank you for sharing your story. I’m sure it will be an encouragement to many.

I’m sure this post is going to bring encouragement to many who are in the same situation.
Indeed, Mark. This is my prayer.
Thanks for posting this. I had a difficult time growing up, especially during those cruel middle-school years. I did not go boy-crazy when the other girls did. Because I did not have a boyfriend, I was labeled “lesbian” and the gossip went flying. This problem haunted me all through high school.
I knew I was NOT a lesbian and never wondered about it. Yet because I was teased about it, it caused me to hate homosexuals and for several years even into my early college days I used to curse gays and homosexuality. One day when I was on a rant over a gay-pride parade on TV, my dad said, “Jesus died for them too.” Those words stopped me in my tracks and I immediately felt sorry about the terrible things I had said. He was right! I was still angry because of my past wounds, but I’d forgotten how much Jesus loves them–just as much as He loves a sinner like me.
I wonder how many other kids fall into the same trap of hating homosexuals because they were labeled one…then forget to love people as Christ loves them.
Thank you for the post, Kathleen, and please continue your work in peoples’ lives.
Thank you Dorothy, for sharing your poignant story. Not only do some youngsters fall into the trap of being mislabeled, many of them begin to believe what others say about them. You were blessed to have a father who spoke truth to you.
Thank you for writing this much needed faithwalk. We all needed to hear about loving the homosexuals and the good advice given. I learned so much from this!

Thank you, Goldie. I’m so happy this post blessed you. My hope and prayer is that many will recognize the simple truth.
Very well said!
Thank you for your encouragement, Mark.
