There’s a popular bar in Texas. It becomes noisy on Saturday nights with rowdy, disorderly people coming and going until the wee hours.
Across the alley is a church. Every Saturday night at 11 PM, the men from the church begin barbecuing hot dogs. They offer free bottles of water and plain hot dogs in a bun to people leaving the bar.
Bar patrons are often alone and lonely. They eagerly welcome the late night snack and as they eat will often open up and share what’s going on in their lives. Some have sad stories and deep needs.
The church men listen, empathize and offer to pray for them on the spot. They might invite them to church the next morning, offering to pick them up. They might give them a free Bible or a leaflet explaining how much God loves them and offers forgiveness and a new life with hope and meaning.
Many of these lonely people recognize it’s God they need and will respond. They begin coming to church and reading the Bible. Their lives change when they discover what Jesus Christ did for them and wants to continue to do. They experience God’s love as He answers their prayers and brings peace. It’s not long before they too begin sharing the Good News about Jesus Christ.
There are many ways people can reach out and meet the needs in a community. What is your church doing?
- But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous. Luke 14:13-14
- Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. Romans 15:7

Will you live for all eternity separated from God? Or will you spend eternity in the presence of God in heaven?
