My husband and I are from large nuclear families. Consequently, when our children were small they would receive an abundance of gifts. We wanted to prevent them from being overwhelmed on Christmas morning. So a couple weeks before Christmas, we’d permit them to open one gift every 2-3 days.
But wait—we had a rule! Before they could open their second gift, they had to write a personal thank you note to the person whose gift they had already opened. By the time Christmas arrived, all the thank you notes were done! The kids were able to take their time writing their notes, knowing there was only one to write—that is, until the next gift was opened.
When they were very young, I would help them compose their notes. As they grew older they became more confident and creative in their letter-writing. It also developed into a good habit that continues to this day.
Now we are receiving precious thank you letters from the grandchildren! What a delight to know they are being trained up in the way they should go.
- Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it. Proverbs 22:6

This life is temporary. This life is short. When this life is over, our bodies will die and become empty shells, but our souls will continue to live forever. Where will the “real you” live? Will you live for all eternity separated from God? Or will you spend eternity in the presence of God in heaven? I have a 2 year old son and this is a valuable reminder for bringing up kids. Thank you Kathleen!
You have such wonderful advice, especially for those with young ones Kathleen. You are living proof of His love.
Thank you my friend! We live and learn and then we can share what works.
