Our friend’s five-year-old daughter began exhibiting signs of obsessive compulsive behavior–OCD. The mother consulted her Christian pediatrician who told her to put a stop to it—now!
The problem? The little girl would hop on her left foot instead of walking down the hall. She could walk perfectly well. Yet whenever she came to the hall, little Suzy would begin hopping on her left foot.
Her mother followed the pediatrician’s advice and told Suzy to walk down the hall instead of hopping.
“I can’t walk, Mom. I have to hop.”
“You can walk.”
“No I can’t!”
“Suzy, I think we need to talk to Jesus about this. ‘Dear Lord, please help me to help Suzy walk down the hall. Help us take each step together. We are depending on You. I’m thanking You in advance, Lord Jesus, for what You are going to do. Amen.’”
“Now Suzy, I want you to hold my hand. We will take one step and then another step very slowly. You won’t hop.”
Together they began walking slowly. Suddenly Suzy began to cry, “Mom, I can’t do this! I have to hop!”
“You are already doing it! Look! You took one step and now you’re taking another step. Jesus is helping us! Thank You Jesus! Suzy is walking. One more step. Thank You Jesus. One more step, Thank You Jesus.”
They walked up and down the hall together holding hands. No hopping. Suzy was walking. Then they were both smiling. “Thank You Jesus!”
“Suzy, you won’t need to hop anymore! Now you will walk. Let’s thank Jesus that He helped you and He will continue to help you every day.”
Suzy never hopped down the hall again! Moreover, there was never any further evidence of obsessive-compulsive behavior. Thank You Jesus!
