Singing in the Caribbean

On another island in the Caribbean I became acquainted with a clerk at the reception desk of a hotel. It being Sunday, I asked him about the churches on his island—I believe we were on Granada that day.

He said the same thing as the ladies on St. Kitts—they had Catholic, Anglican and Methodist Churches. He said he was a Methodist, but not a Christian: “I try to live a Christian life, but I keep failing. I don’t think I’ll ever be good enough to be a Christian.”

I said, “It’s true that you can never be good enough to be worthy of heaven.  Nor can you ever be good enough to get saved.
FIRST, you must surrender your life to Jesus.  Only then will you receive the Holy Spirit. Only then will God supply you with the power you need to live the Christian life.  You see, it is impossible to live the Christian life without the Holy Spirit first!”

I asked him if he would mind if I sang him a little song about the fruit of the Spirit.    He grinned and nodded.  He politely listened as I simply sang Scripture put to music:  “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.  Against such there is no law.   Galatians 5:22.”

I then explained that ALL Christians receive ALL the fruit of the Holy Spirit when we give our lives to Jesus.  ALL the fruit is available to us, not just some of it. We just need to exercise that fruit. God helps us do that—AS we trust in Him.

This young man’s countenance changed before my eyes. This was good news!  Suddenly he had hope in realizing he could be assured of heaven. Yes, he could become a Christian!

Since he had daily access to a computer, I wrote down a helpful website for him: www.godlife.com.  I left him with several tracts and booklets.

As I walked away I noticed my praying family in the corner of the lobby—giving me a thumbs up.

• Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.   Matthew 28:19-20
